"I have nothing to say and I am saying it" is a favourite quote from John Cage. The title of my latest speaks of the same fascination with nothingness and silence: "music is the language of silence". The whole "music is a language" model has deep connections to the linguistic and textual turns of the structuralists and others who sought to understand human and nonhuman institutions and practices as "texts" that could be "read". I don't agree that music is a language. Or, more accurately, I feel that if music is a language of anything, it is a language of silence; it has nothing to say. And that is why it is so powerful.
